Chargers Hand Down Internal Discipline for Teair Tart After Slap on Travis Kelce
Los Angeles, CA -September 9, 2025
The Los Angeles Chargers have imposed internal discipline on defensive tackle Teair Tart after his slap on Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce during Week 1’s fiery AFC West matchup.
General manager Joe Hortiz confirmed the decision Monday morning, stressing the organization’s commitment to accountability. “We thoroughly reviewed Teair Tart’s actions. His behavior and words did not reflect the standards of the Los Angeles Chargers. In a moment of overreaction, he made the wrong choice toward Travis Kelce, and today he must accept the consequences,” Hortiz stated.
According to team officials, Tart has been fined $10,000 internally, an amount estimated at 20–50% of his weekly salary. The funds will be directed to team-affiliated charities, including the Chargers Autism Foundation, ensuring the penalty contributes to a positive cause.
In addition to the fine, Tart has been ordered to issue a public apology — either through a press conference or via an official social media statement. He is expected to directly address his actions and apologize to Kelce, the Chiefs organization, and the NFL.
As part of the disciplinary measures, Tart must also complete four weeks of community service. Team leaders believe this step will not only hold him accountable but also provide him with an opportunity to rebuild trust through meaningful action.
The incident occurred in the second quarter of Friday’s game when Tart, visibly frustrated after a Chiefs scoring drive, lashed out at Kelce. Cameras caught the moment, sparking immediate backlash on social media and fueling calls for stronger discipline.
The NFL has not yet announced whether additional league-wide punishment will follow, though officials are currently reviewing the case. By acting swiftly, the Chargers have signaled their zero tolerance for unsportsmanlike conduct and their dedication to protecting the franchise’s integrity.
For Tart, the path forward is clear: accept responsibility and work to repair his image. For the Chargers, the message remains firm — accountability comes first, no matter the situation.
