Patrick Mahomes Joins Elon Musk in Honoring Iryna Zarutska With $360K Donation
In a powerful display of compassion that’s resonating across the NFL and humanitarian communities, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has pledged $360,000 to honor the memory of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee tragically killed in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 22, 2025. Teaming up with tech titan Elon Musk, who committed $1 million to the cause, Mahomes’ donation will support a nationwide initiative to commission murals celebrating Zarutska’s life while sparking critical conversations about public safety and justice.
The brutal stabbing of Zarutska on a Charlotte light-rail train by suspect Decarlos Brown Jr. has fueled national outrage and demands for systemic change. The mural project, initially launched by Intercom CEO Eoghan McCabe with a $500,000 pledge offering $10,000 grants to artists, gained significant momentum with Musk’s contribution. Now, Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl MVP and the heart of the Chiefs’ dynasty, has added his voice and resources to the effort. Announced on September 10, 2025, his $360,000 donation reflects his deep empathy for Zarutska’s story and her journey as a refugee fleeing war-torn Ukraine.
Mahomes, whose 32,610 passing yards and 246 touchdowns make him one of the NFL’s brightest stars, shared his motivation in a heartfelt statement:
“I hope a part of me can contribute some support to the refugee community as well as to the victims. It’s a pressing issue that needs to be addressed, and I truly wish for better days to come for everyone, so that no one has to suffer a fate like hers.”
His contribution will help fund murals in major cities like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Charlotte, transforming public spaces into vibrant tributes to Zarutska’s resilience. The campaign has already attracted over 1,000 artists, with more than $2.5 million raised, including additional pledges from figures like Andrew Tate. McCabe praised Mahomes’ involvement, stating, “Patrick’s support elevates our mission to ensure Iryna’s story drives meaningful change.”

The NFL community and Chiefs Kingdom have rallied behind Mahomes’ gesture, with fans on X applauding his shift from gridiron hero to philanthropist. Posts highlight his leadership, noting how his donation aligns with his off-field efforts, like his work with the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation to support underserved communities. As the Chiefs prepare for their Week 2 clash against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 14, 2025, Mahomes’ commitment to Zarutska’s legacy underscores his role as a champion both on and off the field. This collaboration with Musk and McCabe ensures that Zarutska’s memory will live on, inspiring action and hope across the nation.
