Steelers Funding for Public Transit to Acrisure Stadium Amid Ongoing Traffic Overload
Pittsburgh, PA — September 12, 2025 — As the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for their home games at Acrisure Stadium, the city of Pittsburgh continues to grapple with severe traffic congestion on game days. In response, the Steelers’ leadership is considering an innovative solution: funding enhanced bus and light rail services to alleviate transportation challenges for fans.
Each NFL season, the North Shore neighborhood, home to Acrisure Stadium, faces gridlock as thousands of Steelers fans converge to support their team. Narrow roads, limited parking, and heavy influxes of fans from across Pennsylvania and beyond have made getting to the stadium a growing logistical hurdle. A recent study highlighted Acrisure Stadium as having some of the worst traffic among NFL venues, with an average travel time of 21 minutes and 16 seconds to cover 10km during game-day rushes.
According to team sources, the Steelers are exploring a partnership with Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) to subsidize expanded bus and light rail services, particularly the Port Authority’s Light Rail System ("The T"), which stops at Allegheny Station near the stadium. The initiative could also include support for riverboat shuttles operated by the Gateway Clipper Fleet, offering fans a unique and traffic-free way to arrive at games. The team is considering covering a portion of the operating costs to make these options more accessible and affordable for fans.
“We want Acrisure Stadium to remain a welcoming home for Steelers Nation,” said Ryan Huzjak, Steelers Senior Vice President of Business Operations. “Investing in public transit could ease the burden on fans and residents alike, ensuring everyone can enjoy game day without the stress of traffic.”
The proposal aligns with broader environmental goals, as shifting fans from individual cars to public transit could significantly reduce carbon emissions on game days. With Acrisure Stadium hosting not only Steelers games but also Pittsburgh Panthers games and major events like the 2026 NFL Draft, the initiative could have a lasting impact on the North Shore’s infrastructure.
Other NFL teams, such as the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks, have collaborated with transit agencies to improve fan access, but the Steelers’ potential move to directly fund services would reflect their deep commitment to the Pittsburgh community. This approach echoes their history of community engagement, seen in initiatives like the Art Rooney Scholarship Fund.
Fans have expressed enthusiasm on social media, with many praising the idea as a “fan-first” move that strengthens the bond between the team and the city. One fan posted on X: “If the Steelers make it easier to get to Acrisure, that’s proof they’re listening to us. Let’s make game days smoother!”
While the plan is still in the discussion phase, the prospect of the Steelers investing in public transit has sparked excitement. With Acrisure Stadium facing persistent traffic challenges, this initiative could transform the game-day experience, benefiting both Steelers Nation and the Pittsburgh community at large.
