Steelers Lose DeShon Elliott for Season, Add Veteran Safety With 500+ Tackles Ahead of Seahawks Matchup
September 9, 2025 — Pittsburgh, PA
— The Pittsburgh Steelers opened their 2025 campaign with a win over the New York Jets, but that victory came with a devastating setback. Starting safety DeShon Elliott has been ruled out for the rest of the season following knee surgery.
Elliott left the game in the first half, walking off under his own power, but postgame evaluations confirmed the worst. His 2025 season is officially over before it truly began.

Head coach Mike Tomlin called the news one of the hardest early blows of the year. “This is a tough day for our team and for DeShon. Losing him to a knee injury that requires surgery is heartbreaking, especially knowing how hard he worked to be ready for this season. But we moved quickly to bring in help, and having that experience in the room right before facing the Seahawks gives us the stability we need. We’ll support DeShon every step of his recovery, and I know Steelers Nation will rally behind him just as they always do.”
To fill the void, the Steelers signed a veteran defensive back with a résumé that includes over Jabrill Peppers, seven interceptions, and six forced fumbles since entering the league as a first-round pick in 2017.
Elliott’s absence creates a significant leadership gap. He had signed a two-year, $12.5 million contract this offseason and was expected to anchor the secondary after the departure of Minkah Fitzpatrick.
The newcomer’s versatility will be key. Known for his ability to play both strong and free safety, as well as contribute as a blitzer, he is expected to step into an immediate role as Pittsburgh prepares for its Week 2 clash with the Seattle Seahawks.
While Elliott begins the long road of rehabilitation, the Steelers now look to this proven playmaker to stabilize their defense and keep them competitive in a crowded AFC.
